Odyssey Stuck as "Connected..." on boot after update

I just did a manual update to build 1476 which seemed to go fine (the progress bar appears and gives the correct firmware version) but it resulted in the reader getting stuck in the "Connected..." screen after the boot animation.

This happens independently of whether or not the reader is connected to a USB-port or the microSD-card is inserted (during boot or otherwise). I've tried connecting and disconnecting it to a USB-port a couple of times (the orange LED still turns on and off) and restarting it a few times (it still reacts as supposed to the power-switch and the boot-animation appears as before). Additionally, I've tried reinstalling the firmware twice, to no avail.

As I've been unable to find any reference to such a problem I figured this would be the best place to ask whether this is a known problem.

Odyssey Some tips and tricks

Some things I did not find in the manual (or maybe they are there and I just did not see them)...
I don't know in which firmware they came to the Bookeen, I just know they exist on 5.1.
  • When reading a book click in the right upper corner. The annotations menu opens. This saves 3 clicks (menu button/menu/annotations) compared to the normal way.
  • But it gets even faster. Still in reading mode, just put two fingers on the screen and hold it for about one second. The text will get marked between your fingers and a menu pops up, "Add Highlight/Add Note".
  • Want to change the font size? Just spread or pinch 2 fingers in the reading section, it will increse/decrease one font size.
  • There's a shortcut to turn on/off the light. Just press the menu button for about one second, and the light status will change. Click one short time again and the menu will close. (this works for all menus, just click the menu button once and the menu closes)

Odyssey question about cover for the HD

I ordered my Odyssey HD & cover with Cultura. The cover was advertised as original, but when I got it, it was a fake and non-fitting piece of cr@p with loose stitches on the back.
After weeks and weeks of complaining I finally got my money back from cultura.
I was told here that the cover for the Odyssey does not fit the Odyssey HD. It fits for 95%, but apparentley for Cultura thats enough to try and saddle people with their overstock of old (fake homebrand) covers.
They would not even replace it with an original cover, even though they advertise them on their website, with picture.
I found 2 more options: Thalia and Decitre.
I sent both of them an email, explaining my problem that I don't want to have a non-fitting cover for the second time, but got no reply from any of them. I don't want to order it with Bookeen because for some reason they are more expensive.

Is there anyone who ordered their Odyssey HD cover with Thalia or Decitre, and can confirm that its the original product that fits 100%?

Orizon won't switch off

Hi,
I have a strange problem, when I switch my Orizon off it changes to one of the "off" screens, i.e. picture of Victor Hugo, then immediately switches back on.
I don't think that the on/off button is sticking.
any ideas?

Folders/subfolders with OdysseyHDFL

Hey, I'm pretty sure it should be okay but I thought I'd double check:

You can do subfolders via just creating them on your computer, yes? Any issues with depth of folders (eg. Folder - Subfolder - subfolder - subfolder, is this okay?)

This ereader isn't available where I am yet (sadface) but when it is I'm buying it... very first ereader so I think that's why I'm checking and doublechecking everything...

Odyssey Change the default book store

Hi,

I just bought I Cybook Odyssey HD Frontlight. Before I bought it I sent an inquiry through Bookeens web form asking if there was any problem with changing the default bookstore to a Swedish one. No problem at all I was told.

The manual says it is possible, as I understand it. You are supposed to contact Bookeen for help.

When I contact the Bookeen support they now say it is "impossible" to change the default store.

Why do they sell an e-reader *internationally* with a bookstore in *french* only? This can not be right.

Can anyone help me to straighten this out?

Totally out of the blue, my Odyssey freezes after startup. A hard reboot opens the updating screen, followed by an error. sometimes after startup it goes into sleep mode and I have to push the power button for 15 seconds and then is starts up to a frozen screen again. I didnt connect it to a pc for over a week or did anything wrong.

Bookeen needs a serial number but I can't access my device and the message on their website wont send without the serial number added to the ticket. Any suggestions?

Odyssey Annotations, how to extract them

Hello,

I'm a recent owner of a Cybook Odyssey HD and I mainly buy it to read articles for my Ph.D research.

So I highly use the annotation features (I tap the upper right of the screen to show quickly the annotation menu).

I use Calibre to manage my book collection. I've seen that there is in Calibre a function to get the annotation back from the device. But apparently it works only with a Kindle.

I try also to read the .epub or .pdf with Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 (on mac os), and each time I open a file with annotations it crash..

So for now the only solution I've found is to connect the Cybook, open the folder "Digital Editions" and inside this folder there is an hidden folder named "Annotations".

Inside this folder you can find .annot file, which when you open it with a text editor is basically an XML file.

Here what it's look like for an .epub :

So the annotated text is in between the <text> </text>

I manage to use regular expression to extract only these part.

Search and replace with regex : </text>*.*<text>

After that I have a text file with only the annotations, but no page indication from where they are.

I'm also using Zotero and this could be useful in my work.

Does anyone manage to transfer the annotation made on a Cybook back to a PDF on a computer ?

Odyssey Virtual keyboard: missing characters with accents?

Hi,

I have been a rather happy user of Odyssey for more than a year. A couple of time I thought I ran into something strange regarding the virtual keyboard, but had no time to investigate further. This weekend I gave it a deep research and I stumbled on something as awkward as the missing text search function:

When writing in French, we very often need the "é" character, and somewhat often the "à" one. But I cannot find them on the virtual keyboard...

By hitting "&" then "àÀ", I get a set of less used accented characters, but not those needed ones.

Did I miss something or are they really missing?

Odyssey Light fading after update

Hi,
I have a problem with my Odyssey HD Frontlight.
After the update to build 1847 (I do not recall what was the previous version, build 1847 is from thalia.de site LINK ) the light of the screen switches off after several seconds (2-4 sec.) if no button is pressed or the screen is not touched. After making any action (like touching the touchscreen or putting the button) the light goes on again and so on.

I do not now if it's a power saving feature (If so, anyone knows where can I change the time after which the light switches off?) or an error in the software.

The hardware should rather be ok, it worked fine before and the lighting of the screen worked ok when i run the test in the service mode.

I tried installing other firmware version via uSD card but the reader would not let me install older version (for example build 1780 from bokeen site) :(.
Is there any way I can bypass it? :(

Odyssey Buying on Amazon and reading on Odyssey

Hi,

Sorry if my question may look silly and/or candid, but I wish to prevent any mishap!

So I would like to buy "Kane and Abel" by Jeffrey Archer in English, and so far, the cheapest looks to be on Amazon.com.

I am just worrying about the impact of DRM, which I am not familiar to. I have an account with Amazon, I have Adobe Digital Editions (unused yet) and an account (unused), I have Calibre of course for the conversion to ePub, but I am not sure on how to proceed starting from the purchase on Amazon.com.

Let say that I want to stick to legal, so I would like to enjoy the book on my Odyssey with its DRM. How do I do it? I have found no recent article (i.e. > 2010) on the Internet.

Hello together!

I'm still very confused with my Odyssey HD Light. After having removed some of the preinstalled books and adding some with the help of Calibre and my file manager (using Ubuntu), the library doesn't seem to update...

In fact - removing the USB cable doesn't result in any action, I have to restart the device. But the books are still in the library! I can't open them - but they still occupy the library!

What is the correct way of treating the Odyssey?

Opus Stuck on "loading screen"

Hello. My Cybook Opus just arrived this week and I'm having problems with him. After I took off some books from him, he didn't power on anymore! When I turn it on, the starting screen shows up, then the "loading" screen shows up and, after a little time, the green light turn off, then on, then off (at regular intervals)... when the light's on, the acelerometer works (because the screen changes his orientation), but even if I let the device long time this way, he never turns on properly! Someone knows how to solve it? :blink:
